The seafood department, however, is the true gem of the store. Jack works behind a counter teeming with local and imported quality fish, shrimp, and shellfish. Fillets are trimmed and even. The whole fish are fresh with clear eyes and shiny skin. Ask him about the specials for the day and you might end up learning something about the fish themselves! His customer service and friendly attitude make visiting Safeway a true pleasure. At the seafood counter, he's the best catch!

I've been going to Safeway since we moved here 10 yrs ago because it's not that crowded and easy to find what you're looking for. Also, Rich (one of the assistant managers) is a great guy that will go out of his way to help his customers.

I was disappointed to leave Safeway, but I work hard for my money and I don't want to water any of it where they don't care to have enough staff not care enough to have much better produce - ALL to improve their corporate earnings at our expense. :-(

Awesome floral and valley department plus they have a Starbucks there as well

Went to Safeway this evening and was very disappointed. Of course, there was only 1 register open, which most of the time I can tolerate and will let customers with fewer items than myself go ahead of me. What I will NOT tolerate is very poor customer service. I had my groceries basically thrown from the older woman at the register and had to tell her that you're dropping my items that I'm paying for on the floor. Then the heavier items were put on top of things like breads, vegetables and etc. I received no apology for her rude behavior, but she did tell me that I spent way too much money there. Well, I thank you Mrs. Doesn't do well with the public lady, I will no longer shop at Safeway in Eldersburg, I'll take the advice of other reviewers and shop at Martin's or at a place where customer satisfaction is a main priority.

When I have gone to the customer service desk, almost every time, after waiting a decent amount of time, I have to go bother a cashier (the young man working the first register made sure I knew it was an inconvenience) to call someone. That assistant manager didn't know much about the produce Dept (in which produce quality has suffered for the years) and roamed aimlessly around the produce area until, by luck, a stocker came out to do his job and was able to show me where the REGULAR romaine lettuce was - it was hidden behind a free standing display. Buy, their much higher priced ORGANIC romaine lettuce, of course, was easy to find. Interesting variation on the old "bait and switch" practice.

One bright stop person is the Seafood Dept. person, Jack. Her takes pride in giving you the best service and good advise on you purchases and his opinions on things (i.e. sauces, sides dishes, etc.) to accompany the seafood in which you are interested.

From 2004 through 2013 +/-, Safeway used to be my "go to" store and I was on a first name basis with a lot of the (then) staff who were all very friendly and helpful. But, as Safeway corporation tries to make even more money by cutting staff and getting anal about any overtime, it is difficult to find anyone who can help you find things. To be able to talk to an actual meat cutter / butcher you have to be lucky enough to happen to be at the store when he is there. Safeway is using ONE meat cutter to service a number of stores in a LARGE area here. So, you get him whenever you get him.

The store needs an upgrade to reflect contemporary shopping demands such as self-checkout, which were available, but *removed*, scan-device shopping to streamline the shopping process, and in the U.S., you drive on the right side of the road, so we're used to entering a building on the right... Here? You enter on the left... Not a big deal, but it's awkward for shopper's entering the store.

I have found much better service at the MARTIN'S store just across the street. The customer service desk is almost always attended with friendly employees that often times will come from behind the desk and say, "Let me show you where that is."

Guess where I have been doing most of my shopping lately. But, I'm sure Safeway Corporate is still busy taking on the profits by poor customer service (less employees to pay, leaving tired, resentful, and overworked employees) and filling the produce Dept with second rate produce (for which they charge first rate prices).

EDIT****Had to drop 2 stars****

The community of Sykesville/Eldersburg is very fortunate to have such a well managed, clean, and consistently stocked Safeway supermarket. Produce is fresh and rotated frequently. The meat department has excellent quality steaks and ground beef. It also imports fantastic lamb.
